German Open Championship - 10th-12th July 2002 (a report from Stéfan Zlot)

The second issue of this championship was organized by the Berliner Yacht Club and sailed on the Wannsee. To cut it short: Hans and Petra Köster, together with the organizing committee did a perfect job. The great hospitality of the club and its members could be proverbial. The Wannsee is an enlargement of the river Havel which crosses Berlin, to join the Elbe. It hosts 21 of the 109 registered sailing clubs of Berlin! Its narrowness sometimes is a problem for setting a long enough race course, but the racing committee handled this with experience. Even after the wind backed some 70 degrees the buoys were in place!

The opening ceremony took place with a rich dinner on the nice terrace in front of the club. The first day of racing showed no wind but a thunderstorm was announced for the afternoon. As we were having dinner in a restaurant belonging to one of the club members and located on Kurfürstendamm, we were soon asked to go back to the club after the heavy storm had swept the area with wind of some 150 km/h, well over force 12, as you all saw on TV. Many of our boats had but little damage, however Singora of Hans Köster had to be brought to the shipyard, to enable her to be sailed at the Gold Cup in Helsinki.

The next day we started racing after the boats had been repaired. Race 1 was completed in light and shifty wind. Gordon Ingate set the standard and won this race, being ahead of the fleet from the start on. The second race had to be cancelled due to lack of wind and the last day there was no wind at all. Instead of sailing the club organized an interesting sight seeing tour by motor boat around the Havel. The price giving dinner party in the club was a success. Gordon Ingate won the championship and explained the meaning of "My Shout". May be the next time you will join us with your 5.5, to spend a great time with good friends in a nice place. Although the wind was absent, the event was a success and we all agreed that we will come back to Berlin - thank you very much Hans and Petra!
